Designed and handcrafted at our studio in Athenry, Co-Galway, the “Fiadh” leather tote is designed for everyday wear. In this version of “Fiadh” we used a vegetable tanned leather from Tuscany. During it’s production this bag supports five jobs in Irelands craft industry and during it’s destruction should it ever end up in landfill it will biodegrade naturally, making it our most sustainable bag to date.
There is a wealth of information out there on the internet about the sustainability and desirability of vegetable tanned leather and we would encourage our customers to check it out. While being the highest quality of all leathers produced in the world vegetable tanned leather is only used in about 10% of the worlds leather manufacturing. The three reasons for this are the higher cost of the raw materials, the uniqueness of the product from hide to hide, as it is a natural uncorrected product it cannot give big producers the uniform colour they may require of the production of say 50,000 bags. Since vegetable tanned leather uses no chemicals to soften or to correct or lock in artificial colour the product starts its life a little stiffer than chemically tanned leather and may transfer some colour from the bag to lighter coloured clothing. The colour transfer if it happens will stop after its initial wear in period and the stiffer vegetable tanned leather will soften and develop a “patina” over use that we have come to find so visually appealing in fine leather goods.
